How to prepare for Windows Vista 64bit

Posted on July 14, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

one year after Windows XP X64 (just sounds nicer =) ), now time to worry about drivers for Windows Vista 64bit. (Yes, I will buy the SB version again)

And I had to find out, the drivers are not such a big issue really, depending on your hardware.

So how does it look like?

Good.

-My Logitech QuickCam Orbit MP is supported with Windows Vista 64bit (If you select them, you get the same download like Windows XP X64 - so they use the same drivers for both OS')

-Motherboard chipset drivers are included in Windows Vista already

-The Epson Stylus Color 980 is supported with an USB driver delivered with Vista, too.

-I have read on the internet that the Windows XP X64 drivers for my wheel will work under Vista 64bit, too.

-Thanks to Windows Update and Google I know that there are Windows XP X64 drivers for my USB NIC. There is a good chance that those also will come with Vista eventhough the Vista Advisor says it's not (so maybe also with update) or I just use the XP X64 driver.

-Unfortunately due to a missunderstanding with Epsons, I have to stay corrected, there are no drivers planned for my Perfection 2480 Photo flatbed scanner. I have just tested and learned about the software VueScan
It works great and it comes with a driver supporting 64bit windows xp and vista as I have read.
Sure, it will cost me money, but this is better than buying a new scanner, as I have 1) no money for that and b) I have just bought it from Eposon as brand new, half a year ago.

-My USB Headset is using the C-Media codec which should be no problem for Vista.

-My office keyboard requires no drivers, the extra function keys and scrolling wheel are managed by Trust application software which is compatible with Windows XP X64 (eventhough not explecitely mentioned on their homepage) so I don't expsect any problems under Vista 64bit.

-Vista 64bit drivers/apps are offered for my Logitech MX1000 mouse.

-For the Joystick Attack 3 only XP X64 drivers/app yet (hope/think it should work under Vista 64bit).

-TV USB II card: I have got windows xp x64 drivers from Leadtek but they did not adjust the drivers (inf etc) so it won't install (but they insisted it was me being too stupid to install it - but windows just refused to acceppt the driver).

An IT system administrator from Bulgaria confirmed my guess when he requested the drivers from me and he took it apart.

Installing Windows Vista 64bit will be a nice adventure, I guess! :)

Got them: USBCells

Posted on July 11, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

I have finally got them: My bunch (i.e. 4 of them) USBCells (See a video presentation.

You will find a lot of speculation and claims about those rechargeable batteries, but few real reviews or reviews that answer questions I had in mind.

So, what you get?

Actually, they are packaged like ordinary rechargeable batteries, except 1 has already the cap open (photo).

Here you see the front

and the back with instructions and warnings in various languages (good!).

What all reviews and articles I have seen yet don't mention: The cap is not connected to the rest of the casing via a plastic stripe (like many other modern stuff). So they won't be worn out or break off. Instead they are connected with an elastic durex cord:

I cannot confirm the reports or afraidnesses saying that the cap or the battries block USB ports which are located next to each other: If you use a normal standard USB slot to put them in, you should not experience any issues. Even if so, thanks to the quite long cord, you can move the cap a bit sideways to make them not block anything.

A capacity of 1300 mAh is not much considering that nowadays you can get 2500 mAh.
I am currently using them for the purpose I originated them for: A C64-in-a-stick (aka DTV). It's yet playing for hours!

The USBCells are actually my first order from abroad. So, I also want to lose a few words about the excellent customer support and feedback they provided to me by email and Skype. Even their CEO wrote an email to me apologizing for a two day's delay caused by half the staff being hunted down by a flue.

Since I was required to pay them using PayPal, I couldn't use their online shop (because it doesn't support PayPal yet), but I was supplied by them by telling me an Ebay link.

What is confusing here is the conflicting statement of supported countries to ship to.

On their FAQ site, they mention: "Deliveries in the UK and EU are free of charge and included in the purchase price (which also includes VAT)." and in the shop (at http://usbcell.com/product/1Delivery & Packaging), they show you a whole list of countries which are supported.

However in their Ebay Shop, they have a very smaller list for "shipping included in item price", but they are not excplecitely excluding any country.

Also, are recent EU countries like Bulgaria and Romania included in the offer here?

I have furthermore noticed a small glitch in the paying proccess. Somehow they have set set some option wrong, because Ebay asking me to enter a price I am willing to pay for shipment. Since handling and shipping was included, it took me a while, till I have figured out, that I had to enter a value of "0.00 GBP" so I was able to perform the payment succcessfully (A fact I have told them by email).

This is surely something to work on. But in case of questions, replies come usually within 24-48 hours, even on weekends and holidays. (which was a pleasant surprise for me).

A lot of emails conversation was caused by this, and neither by email nor by Skype, they ever gave me the impression that I nerve rack them; I felt well served and pretty good cared.

The next step was the order receiving, something which was an incredibly failure, because they got lost (or stolen) in the post. I have received my order, after a re-dispatch with no hassles after 2 days sent by AirSure.

(A surprise by itself, since the track & trace system is NOT GOOD. It arrived to me, but the system insists on telling me after a check "Recipient not available - A delivery was attempted for your item before 22:12 on 06/02/07.").

Last but not least, I have was asked by them to tell them any opinions, suggestions, complaints I might have after upon receiving (Which I doubt as I am 100% satisfied> with my received goods! :) ).

Thanks guys!

(Images taken by myself or from USBCell's media kit)

And now, let's close this review with the last point and question:
Do the USBCells flash when they are 90% loaded? - YES, they do! (For me: After exactly after 4 1/2h all together). And the total charging time was neat 5 hours. (Exact to the minute).
Which might be random luck or sheer excelence of the charger included into the batteries!

ICQ.com now multilingual!

Posted on July 9, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

As you can see on above's screenshot, the ICQ Homepage is multilingual now.

Interestingly, it does not matter to which language I have set my browser.

Fortunately there is a "Switch to English" link! :)

Anyway, a nice step towards the right direction! :)

Real.com lives behind the moon!

Posted on July 9, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

Yesterday, I asked RealNetworks when RealPlayer will support Windows Vista 64bit.

Here is their reply:

Response (Rajalakshmi)
02/20/2007 12:58 AM

"Dear Joerg,

Thank you for contacting RealNetworks Customer Support.

I understand that you are unable to install RealPlayer on your Vista.

We regret to inform you that you cannot install RealPlayer on Windows Vista, Microsoft's new operating system. Vista is currently still in beta testing status, which means that changes are still being made. As RealNetworks continues to grow, we hope to add other operating systems to the compatibility list. Unfortunately, at this time no decisions about future operating systems or dates is available.

If you have any questions or clarifications, please write to us and we will be glad to assist you.

Regards,

Raji
RealNetworks Customer Support"

Oh really? So, if Vista is still beta, how come I have purchased the final SB version?:

Flickr's "Birthday Present"

Posted on July 6, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

Flickr will make a "Birthday Present" to me.

They are moving completely to Yahoo:

"------- Forwarded message -------
From: "Flickr Mail"
To: nafcom[at]c64.org
Subject: [Flickr] Update for Old Skool members
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 01:44:29 +0100

Dear Old Skool Account-Holding Flickr Member,

On March 15th we'll be discontinuing the old email-based
Flickr sign in system. From that point on, everyone will
have to use a Yahoo! ID to sign in to Flickr.

We're making this change now to simplify the sign in
process in advance of several large projects launching this
year, but some Flickr features and tools already require
Yahoo! IDs for sign in -- like the mobile site at
m.flickr.com or the new Yahoo! Go program for mobiles,
available at: http://go.yahoo.com.

95% of your fellow Flickrites already use this system and
their experience is just the same as yours is now, except
they sign in on a different page. It's easy to switch: it
takes about a minute if you already have a Yahoo! ID and
about five minutes if you don't.

You can make the switch at any time in the next few months,
from today till the 15th. (After that day, you'll be
required to merge before you continue using your account.)
To switch, start at this page:

http://flickr.com/account/associate/

Nothing else on your account or experience of Flickr
changes: you can continue to have your FlickrMail and
notifications sent to any email address at any domain and
your screenname will remain the same.

Complete details and answers to most common questions are
available here:

http://flickr.com/help/signin/

Thanks for your patience and understanding - and even
bigger thanks for your continued support of Flickr: if
you're reading this, you've been around for a while and
that means a lot to us!

Warmest regards,

- The Flickreenos"

I am not yet sure whether I like this, as I am not a big fan of Yahoo. Maybe I will move them all to another place, I really didn't decide yet.

Especially annoying is the fact that Yahoo took over del.icio.us Support.

Also annoying is, that Flickr denied the fact that once, a virus was in their system in their Javascript version of their Flickr Badge.

British people protest against high Vista prices

Posted on July 6, 2008 in Windows xp professional upgrade (Default)

British people protest against high Vista prices now
In comparance, you have to pay in UK for all editions about 50-60 USD more than in USA.
They have started a petition regarding this here called "VistaOvercharge".
